The side walls are panelled in violet breccia. The door frames are cut from green Carystian marble, a favourite stone of Byzantine and Roman builders and a signature marble of JF Bentley. The side porches are faced with white Pentelic marble. Note the sculpted Alpha and Omega above the two side doors – indicating Christ as ‘the beginning and the end’. Sculpted medallions either side of the main entrance. Lettered tympanum mosaic above the north door at west end (now sealed) by Nicolete Gray 1982, installed to commemorate the visit of Pope John Paul II to the Cathedral. KOLKATA: Guard rails along a 3-km-long stretch of the main arterial road in New Town has been painted with faces of illustrious personalities and motifs from their works, all in an illusionary 3D art form, which offers commuters a flipbook view of the art.
